Health care providers prescribe Paxil CR to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia, and other mental health conditions like anxiety disorders, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Depression, also known as major depressive disorder or clinical depression, is a mood disorder that negatively affects how you think, behave, and feel. Untreated depression can lead to a range of emotional and physical issues. The symptoms of depression may vary from person to person. They may appear mild in some, while they can be debilitating in others.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a chronic condition that causes unwanted and uncontrollable thoughts or fears (obsessions). These obsessive thoughts lead individuals to engage in repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Obsessions and compulsions can cause severe mental distress and interfere with everyday life.
Bulimia nervosa, commonly referred to as bulimia," is a potentially life-threatening eating disorder. Those with bulimia will go through episodes of “binge eating,” where they cannot control the amount of food they eat, followed by “purging.” Bulimia, if left untreated, can lead to extremely serious medical complications—even death. Due to the cycle of binging and purging, individuals with bulimia can seriously dehydrate themselves, damage their internal organs (including the heart and kidneys), and erode the enamel of their teeth.
Premenstrual dysphoria disorder is characterized by severe symptoms at the onset of menstruation. PMDD can cause extreme mood swings, irritability, depression, and physical symptoms like breast tenderness.
Paxil CR is also prescribed to treat anxiety disorders. A person who suffers from an anxiety disorder may have constant feelings of worry, difficulty concentrating, and an inability to relax. If left untreated, anxiety may eventually interfere with work or school performance, personal relationships, and other daily functions.
Read More About Paxil CRDepression belongs to a group called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs are a class of drugs that treat depression. They are used for example to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (a condition where a man is anxious about the back of his penis).
SSRIs work by reducing the amount of serotonin, a chemical in the brain that sends signals to the brain to moodinitalise the nervous system. This then increases sleepiness and irritability.
Some SSRIs are taken orally with food or with other medications. They are taken in pillows or in mop-top capsules. The manufacturers recommend that symptoms be evenly distributed throughout the day, so that a single depression symptom can be effectively treated.
A common side effect of taking Paxil CR is bloating. This occurs when the symptoms do not go away or subside without treatment. With antidepressants, symptoms are often severe and can be fatal.
Patients should promptly report back any symptoms such as nausea, sweating, insomnia, and electric shock-like symptoms. If they persist or if they become worse, it is important to seek medical attention.
The most common side effects of Paxil CR includenausea**,stomach pain, anddyspepsia. Less serious side effects of Paxil CR includedizzinesstrouble having an erection, and decreased sexual abilityWith antidepressants, the incidence of side effects is generally low, but in some cases, a patient may experienceflushing, a redness or flaking of the skin that can be serious.
Paxil CR should not be used in individuals with a history of serotonin syndrome, a condition that can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. This condition occurs due to the abnormal balance of a hormone that regulates serotonin levels in the brain.

Q.I was diagnosed with a brain tumour in October 2012, and had to take medicine for this and my other tumours. I had a lot of side effects, but no long term complications. I was prescribed a combination of paroxetine and an anti-depressant, and took it for a month. However, I still had an infection, which I couldn’t stop. The tumour had spread to my brain. I’ve had 2 of these treatments for 12 years and have a 5 year history of seizures, but nothing for my life. I had no long term side effects, although I feel very confident about this.
The reason for my tumour is that I have been taking an anti-depressant to keep me healthy, so I don’t feel I have a real chance to live long. My insurance has paid for this treatment and I am not on Medicaid. It is a very expensive drug, and has a high potential for abuse. It is not covered by my insurance and I am not aware that they have put out a warning about this. This is the first time I have been prescribed an anti-depressant. I’m currently on a 7 day course of Paxil, which has a similar effect, but the side effects are minimal.
I have never been diagnosed with a brain tumour. I have been on 5 years of an anti-depressant for 2 years. I take Paxil and it has caused the most side effects. There have been 3 major side effects, including: blurred vision, headaches and nausea, which I was not able to stop. I have been taking an anti-depressant for 4 years and have been very anxious for the last year. I have had 3 surgeries in the last year and the surgery was not an option. I don’t think I would have had any of these side effects if I didn’t have the brain tumour. I have had an operation in June and it has been very expensive, but my insurance has paid for this treatment and I am not on Medicaid. I am now on a 7 day course of Paroxetine and I’ve had 2 surgeries in the last year and the surgery was not an option. I had a diagnosis of a brain tumour in October, and had to take medicine for this, but not for my other tumours. I have been prescribed a combination of paroxetine and an anti-depressant, and took it for a month.
